Between layers
The mola is the textile art of the Guna people. It is made between layers: colored cloths, one on top of another, cut so the color underneath shows through. Ashbel brings that technique to skin.

Meet Ashbel

The mola is the textile art of the Guna people. It is made between layers: colored cloths, one on top of another, cut so the color underneath shows through. Ashbel brings that technique to skin.
One-of-a-kind pattern · never repeated
A figure can be repeated; a pattern, never. In Guna culture every pattern is an identity, so Ashbel draws yours for you alone. He works animals and symbols of his culture as single pieces, armbands or half sleeves, and also does micro-realism, blackwork and full color.
A Guna artist who calls each animal by its Guna name: nalu, the macaw; mommor, the butterfly. At Tattoo Convention Panamá he tattooed a mola macaw in 8 hours, in the Panamanian culture category. His pieces have travelled to the US, Spain, France, the Netherlands and Puerto Rico. In his words: “My design is not just art: it is living culture, a unique story that travels with me.”

Roots
The mola comes from Guna Yala, home of the Guna people on Panama’s Caribbean coast. Ashbel, a Guna artist, brings that art to skin from his studio in Bella Vista, Panama City.

Traveler toolkit
General tips, not studio rules. Ashbel gives you the specifics.
Yes. You can ask for a figure Ashbel has already tattooed, like a macaw or a turtle, but the mola pattern that fills it is drawn new for you and is never repeated: in Guna culture each pattern is an identity.
It depends on the design.
Falena Studio says it is certified by MINSA.
